What is BPC-157?

Body Protection Compound-157 (BPC-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide consisting of 15 amino acids. It is derived from a naturally occurring protective protein found in human gastric juice. The sequence was first described in research published in the early 1990s and has since been the subject of numerous in vitro and animal model studies.

Unlike many peptides studied in isolation, BPC-157 has been examined across a wide range of tissue types and biological systems, making it one of the more broadly studied compounds in peptide research literature.

Mechanisms Under Investigation

Research has focused on several proposed mechanisms of action for BPC-157:

  • Nitric oxide (NO) pathway modulation: Multiple studies have examined BPC-157's interaction with the nitric oxide system, which plays a role in vascular tone and tissue perfusion.
  • Growth factor upregulation: In vitro studies have observed effects on VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and EGF (epidermal growth factor) expression.
  • Tendon and ligament fibroblast activity: Several animal studies have examined BPC-157's effects on tendon-to-bone healing models.
  • Gastrointestinal cytoprotection: Given its origin from gastric juice, a significant body of research has examined its effects in GI tract models.

Current Research Status

As of 2026, BPC-157 research remains primarily at the preclinical stage. The majority of published studies involve rodent models. No large-scale human clinical trials have been completed or published in peer-reviewed journals. Researchers should be aware of this limitation when designing protocols.

Stability and Storage Considerations

BPC-157 is generally considered stable in lyophilised (freeze-dried) form when stored at appropriate temperatures. Reconstituted solutions should be handled according to standard peptide storage protocols. Bacteriostatic water is commonly used as a reconstitution vehicle in research settings.

All research involving BPC-157 should be conducted in accordance with applicable institutional and regulatory guidelines. This compound is not approved for human use by any regulatory authority.
